Inline 6

Straight 6 GM Chevy 216 Engine Rebuild.

216 Chevy Engine Rebuilding Service.

Model: 1948 GM Chevy 216 3.5L Inline-6 OHV 12V.

It was time to give this engine a complete facelift and remanufacture all the components to their former glory.

Here is the agenda for the rebuild:
Inspection, Teardown, and Cleaning.
Block Work: Bore, Hone, and Deck the engine block.
Head Work: Valve Job includes Resurface, Grind valves, Cut 3-angle valve seats, New Exhaust guides and valve stem seals.  Clean, paint, and assemble.  Any missing, damaged, or broken parts will be replaced.
Machine Work- Recondition Crankshaft, Camshaft, and Connecting Rods.

Order New Engine parts; Pistons, Rings, Bearings, Timing, Gaskets, Oil pump, etc.
Last step, assembly!

A shot Before we start any work. It will look a lot better later!

Before Rebuild

Time to tear it down and make sure all the components look good.

MACHINE SERVICES

216 VALVE JOB

So, as I was compiling all the photos for this post, I realized I didn’t get any shots during the valve job, except this one. The best shots of the head are when its finished on the block.  My bad.  Here is what we did.  VJ: Pressure test, Magnaflux for cracks, Resurfaced to a nice flat surface to mate up with the block. Grind valves, Cut 3-angle valve seats, Lap valves, Install new exhaust guides, install new valve stem seals, clean, paint, and assemble.

BLOCK WORK

Time for some block love.  Bore and Hone cylinder finish with proper crosshatch.  Clean in hot tank to remove any metals.  Deck the block surface so the head mates up nicely.  Last we put a coat of primer, then a few coats of paint.

CHEVY 216 ASSEMBLY

New engine parts ordered and delivered; Pistons, Rings, Bearings, Gaskets, Freeze plugs, Timing Set, and Oil pump. Block work is finished.  Valve Job is in progress. Connecting Rods, Crank and Cam reconditioned-reground and polished. We’ve got all the ingredients to start building the Short Block.

Short Block Components

Bottom End

Now that the block work is complete, it’s cleaned and painted, it time to start installing the parts and components.  Starting with the new cam bearings and reground cam. Add in Crank and main bearings.  Connecting rods and pistons, then the timing set.  This beast is coming together.

Earlier, we cleaned up and painted the covers.

Looking Nice!

Better shot of the decking.  Pistons, Rings, Connecting rods, and rod bearings installed.  Scoopers/ Dippers all cleaned up.

Chevy 216 Long Block Assembly

Cylinder head is bolted on and we are installing the oil pump, tubing and pickup. We’ll finish off with the gaskets, oil pan, side and valve covers.

Do you sell rebuilt 216 engines? The engine in my 36 Master Deluxe is overheating and all the gaskets need to be replaced. I was thinking of swapping it out for another 216.

L have a 1952 216 straight 6 that has not been run for years. It was taken out of my 52 1/2 ton and I believe no work was done during truck restoration. My current mechanic is not sure if he can solve any problems with it and so I am looking into rebuild or replace. Like to get some info on your service.

Hello, I have a 1949 Chevy Deluxe Styleline with a 216 Small block. Trying to completely refurbish and bring the car back to life. Everything is rusted below including suspension, brakes, transmission, etc.,

I am looking for a quota and an approximate timeframe. I have pictures as well.

I’d like to keep the same engine, but just have it up and running as smooth as possible as if it was brand new.

I was also thinking, what would it take to just have to the entire car worked on from interior/exterior/undercarriage, engine. And if so, how will that process take place?

    Kind regards!
