Remanufactured Buick 248 Engine
We have a cool classic rebuild at the Machine Shop this month, Buick 248.
Model: 1937 Buick Special 40-Series 248 Straight-8 16V, Valve-in-Head engine.
We are rebuilding the Cylinder Head and the Short Block separately and the customer is performing the final assembly.
Rebuild Agenda: Teardown and inspection. Block work: Bore, Hone, and Deck. Machine components-Crank, Cam, and Connecting Rods. Valve Job on Cylinder head. Rebuild with new engine parts. Clean up extra parts. Assemble Remanufactured Short block and cylinder head. Let’s look at some photos of this beauty!
The block and head came in needing some TLC. Baked on grunge we need to clean up so we can see the condition. Those crispy pistons gotta go! Same with the cylinder head, hot tank here we come. Let’s take these cast iron big guys apart and get moving on the block and head machine work.
Before Valve Job
After Hot Tank
Fresh from the second hot tank, the block is ready for the bore machine. Crank, Cam and Connecting Rods are being reconditioned. Engine parts have been ordered. Elbow grease time.
You can see the difference that boring the cylinders makes, that last one is still black.
Block Shaping Up
We are ready for the honing machine to get a nice cross-hatch on the cylinders. We want proper lubrication and good ring seal for the pistons.
Bore and Hone block work is complete. Now we can deck the surface and make a nice smooth mating surface.
Time to start building the Short Block.
Engine block- bore, honed, and decked. Crank and Cam- reconditioned, reground, and polished.
Buick 248 Engine Rebuild Parts
Few shots of the new Pistons, Bearings, and Gasket Set for the Buick 248. I didn’t get any shots of the Timing Set until it was on the block. More bearing and piston ring pictures below during the rebuild.
Buick 248 Short Block Assembly
Block is ready for assembly, we’re pulling out the Clevite engine assembly lube to put this beast together. Installing Cam, Crankshaft, Cam bearings, Rod bearings, Main bearings and Timing set. Connecting rods were reconditioned and we hung the pistons. Check out the rebuild photos.
Cylinder Head Valve Job
Repairs for the Buick 248 Straight-8 cylinder head: Pressure test, Magnaflux for cracks, Resurface, Grind valves, Cut 3-angle valve seats, install new Exhaust Guides, and new Valve Stem Seals. Clean and assemble.
Buick Special 40 Series 248 Short Block Rebuild
Engine rebuild on the Short block is complete. Take a gander at the end product. This is a cool classic engine from a damn cool car.
