63′ AMC Rambler 196 3.2 Remanufactured Engine

AMC Rambler 196 Engine

1963 AMC Rambler 196 3.2 OHV Straight 6 long block engine rebuild.  These engines were produced from 1952 through 1965 in two versions, (OHV) overhead valve and flathead (L-head) side valve versions.

Rebuild Agenda:
Teardown and Inspection, Hot tank and clean, and Magnuflux for cracks.
Machine Service: Bore and Hone, Grind Crank and Cam, and Valve Job
Clean, Paint, and Assemble the Long Block.

We rebuilt this long block with new pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, timing components, freeze plugs and oil pump.  First it went to the hot tank machine for a good degreasing.  Engine block was bore and honed.  Cylinder head got a basic valve job- resurfaced head, grind the valves, cut seats, clean, painted and assembled.  Any broken or missing parts were replaced.

Cylinder head repairs up next.  Resurfaced cylinder head, cut valve seats, grind valves, installed new guides and valve stem seals, cleaned, painted and assembled the cylinder head.

    it sounds like you guys know Rambler engines. I have a cast iron ovh 196 that is in
    a 1961 Rambler American convertible. I am deciding if I should just have the head rebuilt
    or the entire engine can you give me costs the car appears to have about 97000 miles
    not sure the life of a 196

    I have a 1960 rambler wagon that needs a motor. I have a donor motor I couldn’t get running, that I believe is mostly tore down. I live in Washington state so I’m unsure of logistics, but assuming I could get it down there, what would I be looking at for a rebuild?

    The 195.6 engine was a L-head (flathead) engine from 1941 until 1965. The OHV version came out in 1956 not 1952. It was the same flathead engine converted to OHV.

      I guess I should have added that 1952 Was the first year it was enlarged to 195.6 to be completely clear. This engine was developed for the smaller Nash 600 and later the Rambler. It was produced along with the big “7 main bearing” Six used in the Nash Ambassador till 1956.
