GM Chevy 305 Engine Rebuild

305 Chevy Engine Rebuilding Service.

Model: 1978 GM Chevy 305 5.0L OHV 16V V8.

The popular 305 Chevy small block was due for a rebuild, this is a stock engine, not a racer.

Here is the agenda for the rebuild:
Inspection, Teardown, and Cleaning.
Block Work: Bore, Hone, and Deck the engine block.
Head Work: Valve Job includes Resurface, Grind valves, Cut 3-angle valve seats, New Exhaust guides and valve stem seals.  Clean, paint, and assemble.  Any missing, damaged, or broken parts will be replaced.
Machine Work- Recondition Crankshaft, Camshaft, and Connecting Rods.

Order New Engine parts; Pistons, Rings, Bearings, Timing, Gaskets, Oil pump, etc.
Last step, assembly!

I missed the teardown photos, but all the components checked out and are in good rebuildable shape.  We give everything a good cleaning and move on to the machine services.  Grind crankshaft and camshaft.  Bore and hone the block, and perform a valve job.

Basic Valve Job includes: Pressure test, Magnaflux, Resurface, Grind valves, Cut 3-angle valve seats, install new exhaust guide inserts, install new valve stem seals, clean, paint, and assemble.

Any missing, broken, or damaged parts are replaced.  If it has a fixable crack we will repair it. These heads were crack free.

First shot is after cleaned and painted. We need to cut the seats and resurface it still.
Second shot is after completed valve job.

305 BLOCK WORK

Time to remanufacture the engine block.  A thorough inspection and measurements determines what size we need to bore it at. We check for any ridges, gouges, scoring, or abnormalities.  After it’s off to the Honing machine to finish the cylinders with the proper crosshatch.  Clean in hot tank to remove any oils and metals.  Last, we Deck the block surface and put a coat of primer, then a few coats of blue paint.

While the block work is completed we reconditioned the connecting rods, reground and polished the camshaft and crankshaft, they are ready to go.  Machine work is finished and we are ready to start on the short block assembly.

New engine parts ordered and delivered; Pistons, Rings, Rod Bearings, Cam Bearings, Main Bearings, Gasket set, Freeze plugs, Timing Set, and Oil pump.  Valve Job is in progress so cylinder heads will be ready once the short block if assembled.
