Dodge 237 Flathead-6 Engine Rebuild.
Chrysler Dodge 237 Flathead Straight-6 Engine rebuild.
Model: 1942 Chrysler Dodge DeSoto S Straight-6 Flathead 12V
Valve in Head 25-inch engine family.
This engine is a solid beast. The old guy needs some lovin’, just a little more than the normal rebuild, to bring it back to it’s glory.
The Plan:
Inspection, Teardown, and Cleaning.
Block Work: Bore, Hone, and Deck the engine block.
Head Work: Since this is a Flathead, all the work will be in the block, so Clean, Resurface and Paint the head.
Valve in Head Job includes: Grind valves, Cut 3-angle valve seats, New Exhaust guides and valve stem seals. Clean, paint, and assemble. Any missing, damaged, or broken parts will be replaced.
Machine Work- Recondition Crankshaft, Camshaft, and Connecting Rods.
Order New Engine Rebuild Kit and Parts in correct sizes.
Last step, assembly!
A few shots Before we start any work. I love the Before and After comparison.
These are the down and dirty shots.

Dodge 237 Valve Job
The head work is easy peasy on this Flathead. Clean it up, Resurface to a flat surface to mate up with the block. A second clean, paint it this cool red, add black touches to the casting letters, and we’re good to go.
BLOCK WORK
We cleaned this bad boy up and it revealed some additional work is needed. The valve guides are shot, we need to install new valve guides, check. The valves are in bad shape, new valves on the order list, check. It needs some new valve seats installed, check. Bore and Hone the cylinders leaving a good finish with proper crosshatch. Second clean in hot tank to remove any particulates. Deck the block surface so the head mates up nicely. Last we put a coat of primer, then a few coats of paint.
Time to get the Dodge 237 engine rebuild parts together now that we know the sizes. Here’s what we have: Pistons, Rings, Rod bearings, Main bearings, Cam bearings, Gasket set, Valves, Valve seats, Valve guides, Timing set, Freeze plugs, Oil pump, and some new tubes for the oil pickup.

ASSEMBLY
Block work is complete and we are ready to put the block together. Reconditioned crank and cam are installed. Valvetrain parts are installed. Pistons and reconditioned connecting rods installed. See the pics, it’s looking really good.
I didn’t take any pictures sprucing up the covers, oil pickup, and oil pan, but you can see them cleaned up and painted on the engine. This Dodge 237 engine is looking really cool!
Final Block Assembly
It’s all coming together.
