Nissan Datsun 260Z Engine Rebuilding Service.
Model: 1974-1978 Datsun 260Z 2.6L Inline-6 OHV 12V.
This classic engine came in for a complete rebuild.
It’s a little grungy, but in good shape.
Not a common engine, not like the 280Z models.
1974 was the only year it was sold in the U.S.

A shot Before we start any work. It will look a lot better later!
Before Rebuild
Time to tear it down, inspect and make sure all components are in good rebuildable condition.
We hot tank all the components and give it a good scrub.
I didn’t get shots of the teardown this time, I came in after the block was already apart and cleaned.
MACHINE SERVICES
DATSUN 2.6 VALVE JOB
I didn’t get any shots during the valve job, except this one. Look for good shots of the head finished on the long block assembly. Here is what we did. Pressure test, Magnaflux for cracks, Resurfaced to a nice flat surface to mate up with the block. Grind valves, Cut 3-angle valve seats, Lap valves, Install new exhaust guide inserts, install new valve stem seals, clean, paint, and assemble. As you see from this photo, we needed to spruce up the holes a bit. After we resurfaced it.
260Z BLOCK WORK
Time to bring back the cylinder surfaces and order new pistons. First Bore, then another clean, then Hone cylinder finish with proper crosshatch. Clean again in hot tank to remove any metals. The surface of the block needed to be Decked. Now the surfaces will mate up nicely. Last we put a coat of primer, then a few coats of paint. We decided to paint the interior of the block a nice deep rust red color for contrast.
DATSUN 260Z ENGINE ASSEMBLY
Bottom End
Block machine work is done, crankshaft has been reground, reconditioned the connecting rods and engine parts ordered and delivered. We are ready to start the Short Block assembly. New pistons, rings, bearings and timing set are being installed.
Bolted on the cylinder head and it’s ready to go.
Behold the Beauty!
